1. Select the Right Fish Tank
Of course, you have to choose the best fish tank for a goldfish. Go for a bigger fish tank rather than just using a bowl.
The commonly recommended for goldfish is a 20-gallon tank. You can buy separate fish tanks later on if you intend to add more fish populations.
2. Install the Filtration System
The filtration system comes in handy when you have to keep the water clean and healthy for the fish to thrive.
There are various types of fish tank filter systems you can buy today, but go for the one within your budget and can still deliver on functionality.
Undergravel filters are commonly recommended by many people as they are effective in cleaning and will not harm the goldfish with blades.
3. Adding a Heating System
This is often optional in most cases. It all depends on where you live. You can decide if the heating system is necessary or not.
For the non-exotic goldfish, you would want to keep the tank temperatures between 16 degrees Celsius and 22 degrees Celsius.
4. Add Gravel and Decorations
The goldfish is a scavenger by nature, so your mind finds them putting their mouths in the sand looking for food.
To avoid choking, choose gravel that is big to prevent it from getting into the goldfish mouth.
Other than gravel, it would be nice to have some nice additions to act as decorations to the whole tank. The decorations will help brighten up the whole tank.
5. Filling the Tank with Water
After setting up the above steps, it is time now to fill the tank with water treated with a water conditioner. If you have installed a heater, start by filling close to the heater and filter and move to the other directions.
Startup your heater and filter based on the directions given by the manufacturer.
Do not put in the fish just yet, run the system for a couple of days to see if it works perfectly first before now choosing to add the fish.
6. Add the Fish to the Tank
Now that you are sure about the system working, you can add fish to the tank now. Add one or two goldfish at a time rather than dumping a bunch of them.
Too many goldfish in the same tank might cause stress to the biological system of the tank. This will make them too easily die after a few days. You can add several others later when you are sure the tank can handle more.
